She’s never going to be my favourite musician and there are a fair few of her songs that I don’t care for but Taylor Swift puts on a great show and belting out We Are Never getting Back Together along with Taylor and 15,000 other fans was a great ending to a brilliant night. I know that I, as a 21 year old man, am not the target audience for these platitudes but they were a little grating for me. If it was anyone but Taylor I would have been cynically rolling my eyes at every opportunity but her mix of sweetness and sincerity would win over all but the coldest of audience members. Don’t get me wrong, Taylor seems like a genuinely sweet and sincere person but her talk was riddled with clichés. Along with these there was also a lot of talk and this, unfortunately, was the only disappointment for me. The songs were supplemented by some nice pre-recorded visuals that provided a theatrical element to some songs (most notably adding a narrative about a silver screen siren to The Lucky One) and candid insights into Taylors early life. There were moments to dance and sing-along to as well as the aforementioned intimate moments, including a lovely version of Fifteen, and an emotional performance of All Too Well. The latter was purely about Taylor and her song but even in the moments where pyrotechnics, light shows, and a dozen dancers were vying for your attention Taylor was never overwhelmed or upstaged by the staging. The setlist provided lots of variety and, considering the number of hits she dished out, plenty of bang for your buck.
This isn’t the only case either, there are some surprising moments of big choreography that you can enjoy from any point in the arena. I won’t spoil it for anyone who’s not seen it yet but the opening of the show is sublime, totally fantastic. We could see Taylor, her band, and dancers on two massive screens positioned either side of the stage but there was plenty on offer to stop it from feeling like you were just watching a recorded performance. The flying stages were used rarely enough to not seem gimmicky and, in the case of T reacherous, neatly mirrored the lyrical content. Moving out onto an elevating stage in the middle of the crowd was a great touch that brought some intimacy to the solo performances with her guitar. The tribal drum’s added to Holy Ground and the retro girl-group make over of You Belong With Me were welcome changes.īeing sat in the middle of the top tier as I was I didn’t expect to have the best view but Taylor didn’t stop her distance from most of the audience from spoiling the show.
Probably because she’s one of the few modern pop stars who is closely involved with all aspects of her music production there were enough musical variations to stop it sounding like you were just listening to a CD.
